Uganda Olympic Committee’s quest for medals on the big stage will have it concentrating on areas of strength.

UOC has stated that more resources will be directed in areas where the country has more medal potential.

“We are working with the federations to identify and agree on areas of strength where we can invest to get more Olympic and Commonwealth medals,” explained UOC president William Blick.

Blick announced the new approach at a national Olympic strategic planning workshop last week.

This is all part of a process to develop a national sports strategic plan. An IOC consultant will soon come to Uganda to further the process of drawing the plan.

The workshop, the first of several others that will be held, involved 23 federations. The workshops will help identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as the strategic plan is developed.

The workshop was held in partnership with the Germany Olympic Committee and was facilitated by German technical expert Gunter Lange (pictured, left).

The workshop was opened by German Deputy Ambassador Joachim Duster.

Duster stressed that sports provides the best platform of improving a country’s image.

He cited the German experience where staging of the Olympics and football World Cup helped boost a nation whose image had been battered by the Nazi reign of terror.

Blick also explained that he wants federations directly involved in the planning process.
