President Museveni has convened a meeting with members of the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) over the Kavera ban. The meeting is taking place at State House Entebbe.

National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has effected a ban polythene bags with an aim of protecting the environment. The meeting is taking place at state house Entebbe.

According to UMA chairman, Amos Nzeyi, the meeting will discuss the fate of the 15 Kavera recycling plants.

"If we don't make the President realize the importance of the sector to the country, we shall not have raw materials for making plastic pipes among other products from Kavera, which the recycling plants are engaged in,” he said.

He also added that they will ask the President to intervene in the high electricity costs which he said is affecting production and the sector as a whole.

Nzeyi  explained that UMA is not promoting the banned microns of below 30, but advocating for the proper use of the kavera, which includes proper disposal; so that the environment is not affected.

"Closing all these factories means loss of employment to many people especially the youth and when the youth are idle they become a security threat," he said.
