Luwero to become top agriculture zone - Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni, who is on a poverty eradication drive in Luwero district, has vowed to make Luwero Triangle a zone for the rest of the country to learn modern commercial agriculture.The fresh campaign targets NRM veterans.

President Yoweri Museveni, who is on a poverty eradication drive in Luwero district, has vowed to make Luwero Triangle a model zone for the rest of the country to learn modern commercial agriculture.The fresh campaign targets NRM veterans, many of  whom supported the NRA, during the liberation struggle.
 
“I want to make Luwero district a model zone in Uganda as far as creating wealth is concerned. I will establish a barracks in every Saza (county) to ensure the implementation of the exercise,” the President said yesterday. 
 
He was addressing veterans at Kalasa Primary School in Makulubita sub-county in Luwero. 
 
Museveni, who is on a poverty-eradication drive, will traverse a number of districts namely; Mukono, Kayunga, Mpigi, Mityana, Nakasongola, Kibaale, Kiboga and Wakiso. 
 
At the launch, President Museveni announced that Senior Presidential Adviser on Security Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho (Salim Saleh) deputised by Brig. Proscovia Nalweyiso will oversee the implementation of the projects.
 
Yesterday, President Museveni reiterated his call to have systematic approach in implementing programmes in agriculture, education, health and infrastructure.
 
He added that in wealth creation, a family that has land holding of four acres must use one acre for coffee, another one for fruits and another for bananas for food security. Museveni said the fourth acre should have elephant grass to cater for cattle.
 
The President also advised families to embark on domestic projects in their homesteads such as rearing chicken for eggs, improved livestock such as goats and apiary, whereas those near swamps can open up fish ponds. 
 
He pledged to provide the people of Luwero with seedlings to plant.
 
Abraham Byandala, the works and transport minister; Irene Muloni, the energy minister; Rose Namayanja, the information minister and Sarah Kataike, the state minister for Luwero Triangle, attended the meeting.
