THAT Ugandan champion Jas Mangat survived the rugged and eventful KCB Safari Rally to score 18 crucial Africa Rally Championship points, speculators would be forgiven to declare 2013 his year.

Mangat broke a rear shock absorber but continued to drive. He damaged the rear suspension control arms but managed to repair his Mitsubishi EvoX, R4 to claim 16th position.

Despite finishing 16th, he was second in the ARC clas¬sification after Africa championship contenders Jassy Singh and Davite Giancarlo dropped out of the race rated the toughest ARC round so far. The other Kenyans including the winner Baldev Chager were not eligible to score points.

Jaspreet Chathe who was on the verge of denying Mangat second place in continental classification rolled in the same stage. Reigning Africa champion Mohammed Essa of Zambia took maximum ARC points although he finished seventh overall.

Mangat now leads the Africa championship with 58 points, eight clear of Essa going into the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Rally in Kampala next month. Singh dropped to fourth
