Following the liberalisation of the energy sector, power distribution was privatised to improve service delivery. With the largest utility operator concentrating on urban areas, rural areas were left underserved. With the inception of REA in 2001, other utility operators came on board.

Following the liberalisation of the energy sector, power distribution was privatised to improve service delivery. With the largest utility operator concentrating on urban areas, rural areas were left underserved. With the inception of REA in 2001, other utility operators came on board.

REA is mandated to promote electricity in all rural parts of the country. To do so, the agency has to ensure proper preparation and management of rural electrification schemes through planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The electricity cooperative model ensures participation by local communities in the operation of electricity supply management
