Government has been asked to increase the number of midwives providing skilled health care to women in Uganda.
Najjemba Maria, the midwifery adviser in the ministry of health said the shortage of midwives in Uganda is putting mothers and their babies in danger.
She said their small number has made them struggle to meet demands of women in the country which leaves them overworked.
Close to 20 women die every day giving birth in Uganda.
Najjemba's call comes ahead of the International Day of the Midwife, held annually on May 5 to emphasize the work of midwives.
