20yr old woman sentenced for defilement

SUSAN Akello, 20, a resident of Oyam district has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for aggravated defilement after she pleaded guilty to the offence

SUSAN Akello, 20, a resident of Oyam district has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for aggravated defilement after she pleaded guilty to the offence.

 

Court presided over by Lady Justice Dr. Winifred Nabisinde heard that Akello on 27/3/2014 well knowing she had HIV, defiled 15 year old boy, son of her brother in law.

 

The victim is reported to have gone to the home of Akello and spent some time with her. At 10pm when he wanted to leave, she coerced him to stay and later defiled him.

 

The she pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted on her own plea.

 

Prosecution led by Harriet Adubango said the offence was a very serious one under the law punishable by the maximum sentence of death. She said being son to her brother in law, the Akello ought to have protected him from all dangers not to manipulate him.

Adubango said this highlights that even boy children are abused though their plight is not brought to light.

 

The prosecutor asked court to protect the boy child by handing out a deterrent sentence that will enable her reflect on her actions and reform.

 

“Many members of society will know the boy child can seek redress when abused.”

 

Justice Nabisinde while delivering the sentence said the death sentence would not serve the end of justice in this case. She said the starting sentence of 35 years would be too harsh.

 

She said the victim was an adolescent experiencing his sexuality and ought not to have been manipulated.

The same court also convicted other people who pleaded guilty to offences against them.

 

Ronald Okello, 20 of Akitenino in Lira Municipality was sentenced to community service orders for aggravated defilement. He defiled 17 year old girl in January 2014. The Judge said its not easy to know who gave the other HIV. She directed that both should be counselled and get treatment.

 

Boney Ogwok, was sentenced to 8 years for aggravated defilement of a 13 year old girl.

 

Esther Akello of Oyam, was sentenced to 8 years for the murder of her husband Patrick Ogwal. She hit him on the head with hoe.

 

Santa Aboko was sentenced to 4 years for murdering her husband Jimmy Okaka. The Judge ordered her to be counseled to come to terms with her actions.

Anna Akullo of Abadmunu, Lira, was sentenced to 8 years for murder of her husband Onyolo Tony on September 27, 2014.

 

Lydia Ayo of Dokolo was convicted for the murder of her husband Sarafino Ogwang and will be sentenced on Thursday.

 

Betty Anwene of Kole, was convicted for the October 9, 2014 murder of her husband Alfred Okello. She will also be sentenced on Thursday.
