Minister of State for Sports, Charles Bakkabulindi has advised sports federations and associations in the country to adhere to requirements stipulated by government through National Council of Sports if they should be helped financially to reach the grassroots.

Bakkabulindi was addressing Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) members at their monthly meeting for March 2015 at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, Uganda on Monday.

National federations and associations recently protested NCS decision for the over 50 sports governing bodies to meet some requirements to register with them or be disbanded.

“If they (sports governing bodies) do not want to be controlled or monitored, government will not invest in programmes below the national teams. How can government invest where it cannot get accountability,” wondered.

The minister said that he is advocating for an independent sports ministry to allow government allocate a sufficient budget for games and sports because sports is increasingly turning into a tool of development.

“The future of sports is to have an independent ministry for it because sport is being turned into a tool of development,” Bakkabulindi said.
