The police in Mubende are stuck with bodies of two local gold miners, who died of suffocation in the Kitumbi gold mines.

Although the incident is said to have occurred on Easter Sunday at Kapya gold mines in Kitumbi Sub County, Mubende district, police learnt about it and recovered the bodies on Monday.

Daniel Ogwellan, the officer in charge of Kassanda police station in Mubende district said that the deceased, had gone deep in on one the pits from where they died.

“They had with them a machine which they use to dig the soil and another machine which was pumping the water out. After spending long, their colleague realized they had died,” Ogwellan said.

He identified the deceased as Aluberi Ndaisaba, 27, a Rwandan national. Another was identified as Dan Asiimwe, 18. Asiimwe was said to have come from Mukono district, but details of his relatives and exact place could not be established. The bodies were removed and taken to Kasanda healthy center III mortuary.

The incident comes just a few weeks, after a similar one occurred last month where two miners were killed. For the past two years, a number of people have died in these mines, some being buried by landslides, others suffocating and a few a murdered.

More mining sites have also been discovered and hundreds of people continue to flock the area from different parts of the country and outside Uganda, to engage in the business. Ogwellan said a death inquiry file was opened up at Kassanda police station as they look for relatives of the deceased.
