Information and national guidance minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi has urged residents of Mubende district to undertake commercial agricultural practices to boost their income and strengthen the country’s economy.

He was on Thursday, speaking during the annual general meeting of members of Kitumbi SACCOS at Lubaali trading centre in Kitumbi subcounty.

“The struggle now is to see that each family transforms from subsistence to commercial farming. We need to see each homestead with stable income.

This will be possible through the available programmes and others coming soon,” he said.

He commended the people of Mubende for the savings and credit schemes, saying the

Government would help them to manage their finances.

Mubende district leaders appealed to President Museveni, to allow to create two more districts.

“The district is so big that we are failing to effectively deliver the services. Even the funds are not enough,” Francis Kibuuka, the LC 5 chairperson, said.

Scovia Ndagire, the vicechairperson of Kitumbi subcounty also noted that, subcounties like Kitumbi and Butolooga are too far from the headquarters and this is also hindering them from getting good services.

For long, residents and district leaders have been appealing for the creation of two more districts in Mubende. One of them is Kassanda county which would become a separate district and another is Kasambya County which would also become a separate district, each with over seven sub counties.

In response, the minister asked the residents to continue ensuring that services are delivered despite the challenges. He said prioritisation of projects like the rehabilitation of Mubende Hospital and road networks had been done in the area. Muhwezi said creating new districts would have financial implications.

Kitumbi SACCOS has over 1,000 members, the majority of whom are farmers while the others are traders who deal in agricultural produce.
