Uganda must up their game ahead of the annual Zone 4.2 Chess Championships as Egypt has confirmed the participation of top players in Grandmaster El Gindy Essam and International Master Hesham Abdelrahman.

The Championships will be held in Kampala from April 17 to 26, 2015 and will coincide with the World Team Chess Championships scheduled for Armenia and China from April 18 to 29.

Egypt has also confirmed the participation of two female players Eman Elansary and Ehab Tasneem. Moroccan International Arbiter Abdelfattah Akkour will be in charge of officiating.

“Akkour’s appointment as chief arbiter in the upcoming zonal has been confirmed by Africa Chess Confederation President, Lewis Ncube,” Vianney Luggya, the Uganda Chess Federation president said.

“The Africa Chess Confederation recently took a stand to the effect that chief arbiters in international FIDE events should not hail from the host federation and in the case of zonals they should come from countries outside of that zone,” he added.

There are ten countries in Zone 4.2; Sudan, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt and Uganda. Luggya said Kenya, Tanzania and hosts Uganda are the only countries likely to field maximum number of players in the event.

He noted that the Africa chess boss, Ncube sanctioned an increase in the number of slots for participating countries from three to five and five to seven for the hosts.

The development means that Uganda’s male contingent of Arthur Ssegwanyi, Harold Wanyama, Haruna Nsubuga, Mathias Ssonko and International Master (IM) Elijah Emojong could be joined by Daniel Bagaadde and Raphael Buti who had narrowly missed out.

Similarly, the ladies team of Goretti Angolikin, Christine Namaganda, Grace Kigeni, Joan Nakimuli and Ivy Amoko could be joined by Phiona Mutesi.
