The Uganda Golf Union has stepped up gear to ensure Uganda wins the Africa Zone 6 Golf Championship that Uganda is going to host, April 14-18 at Kitante.

After unveiling sponsors for the forthcoming tournament last week at Sheraton Hotel the union has gone ahead to ensure the Ugandan team is not only physically fit but are also in sound health.

On Monday the ten-man team will undergo medicals at AAR-the medical insurers of the 20th edition of the annual championships

The check-ups will involve a confidential chat with Dr. Henry Kinene, a thorough physical examination, and some blood tests.

The team of ten is already in camp after going through intensive qualifiers at the Uganda Golf Club.

The Union has also put up a strong committee headed by UGU vice president Johnson Omolo with Innocent Kihiika as tournament director and assistant respectively, to ensure a successful tournament.

Apart from the participating nations, delegates from the R&A, Africa Golf Confederation and presidents of participating unions will also grace the four-day event.

The tournament will start with an official practice round, before the singles, doubles and foursomes thereafter and end with another singles round on April 18.

Uganda's best outing has been a third place finish when Uganda hosted the event for the first time.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R & A) of St Andrews in Scotland, Sheraton Hotel Kampala NTV, Uganda Tourism Board, AAR and Uganda Breweries are sponsors of the tournament.

South Africa are the record winners of the championship with 15 victories since 1999 in Africa's flagship event.

The Ugandan team under coach Amos Kamya is comprised of Adolf Muhumuza (captain), Lawrence Muhenda, Ronald Bukenya, Gideon Kagyenzi, Henry Lujja, Ronald Otile, Robert Oluba & Martin Ochaya. Ronald Rugumayo and Happy Robert are the reserves.

Golfers from Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe will compete in the championship.
