No cause for alarm - Gen Kayihura

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura has called for calm following reports of a planned terrorist attack on Kampala.

KAMPALA - Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura has called for calm following reports of  a planned  terrorist attack  on Kampala.

"Do not fear, go out, shop, enjoy and don't panic. Terrorists always want to create fear and panic which is their major weapon but continue being vigilant." the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura said this morning at a press conference.

He also assured tourists and business community of safety. "No one should change their mind. That is how we have survived the Al-Shabaab since 2010 and Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) since early 90's."

Kayuhura had called the press at the police headquarters in Naguru city suburbs  to give a progressive report on the terror threats received.

He said that the red flag raised on Wednesday prompted the police and sister security agencies to heighten security through increased deployments in the city.

"We got a specific threat targeting a specific section of the community and we acted accordingly," Kayihura said .Adding that, "Terrorism is real and we shall not take anything for granted."

The US and UK embassies on Wednesday warned of a possible terror attack on Kampala and advised their nationals to avoid public places.

Kayihura said there was no cause for alarm, saying they were on top of the situation. He, however, called for continued vigilance.

On Thursday,Earlier, the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, also asked Ugandans to stay calm, adding that the Al-Shabaab and its affiliates, the Al-Qaeda, have always harboured intensions to attack Uganda.
