VP Sskenadi flags off World Cross Country team

The Vice president, Edward Ssekandi has assured Ugandan athletes of support, telling them "we are with you all through and do your best to raise Uganda''s flag higher."

The Vice president, Edward Ssekandi  has assured Ugandan athletes of support, telling them "we are  with you all through and do your best  to raise Uganda's flag higher."


Ssekandi was flagging off the national team led by Moses Kipsiro and Nancy Cheptegei to the  2015 IAAF World Cross Country championships that are due in Guiyang, China on Saturday.

"We wish you the best for your sacrifice to flag off the team. I understand that you have had the best preparations and we shall continue to support you all through," said Ssekandi at a ceremony that was held at Lugogo's Coffe Chimney Restaurant.

"Travel safely, be disciplined and comeback with good results. You are our flag bearers."

State sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, who will be leading the Ugandan delegation said that the team had some good training and was positive of Uganda's chances to win medals.

"It has been a united team and working hard. They are focussed and  we  looking forward for a great performance," said  Bakkabulindi, who is also  the chairman of the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country championships local organising committee.

UAF President Domenic Otuchet was happy that  they have been able to enter a full team in all competitions, the  first time for  an event that is outside Africa.

The team flies out on Wednesday evening aboard Qatar Airways flight.

Junior women: Mercyline Chelangat, Doreen Chemutai, Janat Chemusto, Rachael Chebet Zena and Stella Chesang

Junior men: Joshua Cheptegei, Fred Musobo, Monday Bushendich, Abel Chebet and Robert Chemonges

Senior women: Juliet Chekwel, Adero Nyakisi, Nancy Cheptegei, Patricia Chekwemboi and Emily Chebet

Senior Men: Moses Kipsiro, Timothy Toroitich, Philip Kipyeko, Geoffrey Kusuro and Moses Kibet​
