BANK of Uganda governor Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile has called on the public to join in big numbers the second edition of the Rotary Cancer Run due August 25 at Kololo Airstrip.

Speaking at the launch of the race, at the site of the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital yesterday, Mutebile was happy to note that what started as a dream had materialized into reality with the Cancer ward up and only requiring final touches.

"Nothing makes me more proud than this. This is a fantastic project by Rotarians so let us ensure it materializes. Remember one by one makes a bundle so I urge the public to give us their bundles so that we can finish this project by end of this year," Mutebile remarked.

He called on Rotarians upcountry to organize similar runs with a purpose of raising money for the same cause. He said the Bank of Uganda would commit sh20m for the project.

Last year's race that was flagged off by Olympian Stephen Kiprotich raised over sh300m that went to putting up the structure. According to Rotarian Stephen Mwanje proceeds from this year's run will go towards the interior of the two-storied structure while next year's proceeds will go towards buying equipment for the same.

Beatrice Lugalambi who represented Centenary Bank, the initial funders of the project, said the bank has already contributed in excess of sh300m and will continue to participate in such life changing causes.

Crown Beverages has also committed sh80m on top of the sh50m they offered early this year for the race and project respectively while National Hosing will provide all the roofing materials for the ward.

USPA president Mark Namanya assured guests that USPA would give the necessary publicity for the event.

Construction of the ward started in 2011 and could be completed ahead of the 2014 schedule.
