MONTERREY - Mexican police arrested a 13-year-old boy who was carrying an AK-47 assault rifle, a pistol, weapon cartridges and marijuana, a prosecutor said Sunday.

"The weapons we found were analyzed by experts and they were not found to be connected to any criminal act," Javier Flores, attorney in Nuevo Leon state, in northeast Mexico, told AFP.

However, local media said that the as yet unnamed kid it has dubbed "Hit boy" works for the Sinalocos gang, and took part in several recent murders in an area south of Monterrey, the third largest city in Mexico.

He was released after his arrest Wednesday in Monterrey but faces charges of possession of arms and drugs, said Flores.

He was detained alongside an older boy and an adult of 34 who were arrested after their attempts to escape failed.
