THE contingent commander of the UPDF in the Central African Republic, Col. Michael Kabango has said that the army is yet to identify the nationalities and names of the five Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels who were killed over the weekend.

Speaking to New Vision on Tuesday, Kabango said: “Nobody has been identified yet. But we are working around the clock to establish the names and nationalities of the five rebels killed.”

Five LRA rebels were killed by the by the African Union Regional Task Force troops from the Ugandan Contingent (UPDF).

According to Paddy Ankunda, the UPDF spokesperson, the five are suspected to have been part of the core team of LRA.

They were killed on Saturday at Quanda in the Central African Republic (CAR).

Kabango said that four weapons were recovered during a brief exchange between the UPDF and the rebels.

Kabango, who said that 210 live ammunitions were recovered from the rebels, said the weapons recovered were AK-47 type.

Ankunda said that the LRA core team has developed deep cracks. He however rallied the LRA rebels, who are willing to surrender, to come out.

Earlier this year, LRA commander Maj. Gen. Dominic Ongwen surrendered, and he was handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face justice.

Ongwen was indicted by ICC in 2005 for war crimes allegedly committed during the LRA rebellion largely fought in Northern Uganda.

During a pre-trial session at ICC, Ongwen was charged with seven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the atrocities committed by the LRA during its protracted insurgency in northern Uganda.

Ongwen has since selected Oyam North MP Krispus Ayena as his lead lawyer at the ICC.

Meanwhile, the ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda is in Uganda to update Government and witnesses about the activities of her office and Ongwen’s case at the international court.

Ankunda said that the African Union Regional Task Force troops in CAR have intensified the hunt for the LRA leader Joseph Kony and his team.
