40 teams will be battling for an opportunity to represent Uganda at the annual Anfield regional soccer gala that is due in Liverpool in May. The team that performs best at the Uganda stage will advance to the East African leg, which will be held in Nairobi next month.
The New Vision and Urban TV soccer team have been handed a seemingly easy group, while their counterparts Bukedde have to battle Uganda Breweries and Coca-Cola, some of the top teams in the corporate league if they are to advance to the knockout rounds. The national event is set for Saturday at Namboole starting 8am.
The draw for the event were conducted at Sheraton Hotel on Thursday by Edgars, the company set to handle the technical matters of the event.
New Vision were drawn in Group 3 together with Liverpool Fans, Simba Group and Three ways while Urban had Sanyu , Standard Chartered and Robbie Fowler, a select team of Standard Chartered bank customers. The top two in each group advance to the knockout round.
Edgar Watson, the chief executive officer of the national soccer body warned licensed players not to take part in the tournament as they are tied by the rules governing them.

“It is an amateur tournament. A team that will use a licensed player will be disqualified and the licensed player will also be punished,” said Watson.
Harriet Nangozi of Standard Chartered Bank said that they had zeroed on seeing that the best team wins as a means of boosting competition.
