Janani Luwum commemorations begin today

Commemorations of the late Janan Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda who was murdered in 1977 during Idi Amin''s reign kick off today.

KITGUM - Commemorations of the late Janani Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda who was murdered in 1977 during Idi Amin's reign kick off today at Wii Gweng, Mucwini in Kitgum District.            

Ambassador Olara Otunu, the chairman of the organizing committee told New Vision on phone that the commemoration will mainly be coupled with prayer and worship in honour of the martyr.          

"Today is going to be a big day in Mucwini as we remember Janani Luwum," he said.          

Luwum was accused of being involved in a secret movement that was planning to overthrow Amin's government. After his murder on February 16, 1977, Luwum’s body was reportedly placed in a staged car accident.

Otunnu also revealed that a book titled "Archbishop Janani: Witness and Martyrdom of a 20th Century Saint, to which he is the author and is published by Fountain Publishers, will be available at the commemoration grounds.

In attendance will be President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who will be the Guest of Honour, the Ugandan-born Archbishop of York, Dr.  John Sentamu, Governor of Bank of Uganda Emmanuel Mutebile, Former Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi.

Also expected at the event is former principal judge and now head of the Judicial Service Commission Justice James Ogoola, Bishop Stanley Ntagali the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, among other dignitaries.

The celebrations will be concluded on February 22 at St. Janani Luwum Church at Nsambya in Kabalagala. The theme of the celebrations is ‘Faithfulness unto death’.
