Government to carry out Rural Electrification Programmes. REA was established by a statutory instrument No 75 in 2001. REA has a board; The Rural Electrification Board (REB) which offers policy guidance. As a Government agency, REA is committed to increasing access to electricity in rural areas. The 2006-2011 manifesto pledges were all successfully implemented and commissioned. A number of rural electrification projects rolled over from the 2006 -2011 manifesto. Most
of the schemes have been implemented as follows.


Achievements to date:
Grid Extension: as a means of infrastructural development the country has had increased coverage for both low voltage and medium voltage lines: 5700 km of medium Voltage (MV) power lines and 2500 km of Low Voltage (LV) reti culati on networks have been built. A further 2000 km of MV power lines and 1500 km of LV are in advanced stage of construction expected to be commissioned by end of March 2014.
