President Yoweri Museveni has held talks with a Chinese delegation led by State Councilor Yang Jiechi, at State House, Entebbe.

The visiting delegation included the Minister of Commerce, Fang Aiqing and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and director of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Kong Quan and the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhao Yali.

According to a press release from State House, President Museveni informed his guests that the relations between the two countries have strengthened further particularly through cooperation in the fields of energy and railways.

He told his guests that Uganda is committed to modernising her railway sector from the Indian Ocean coast into the country.

“Uganda has had a very good relationship with China since independence.” he remarked.

He commended the Chinese companies involved in the construction of roads in Uganda and noted that the two countries also enjoy close cooperation in the development of the minerals sector in Uganda. He emphasized that it was crucial for Uganda, Africa and China to work and mutually support each other on issues of investments and markets.

He said that emphasis should be put on cooperation in production, purchasing, markets and transporting of finished products.

The release further stated that Yang Jiechi thanked President Museveni for the confidence he has in the Chinese economy.

He pledged that his government will provide Uganda with medical supplies worth 10 million Yuan in addition to office equipment worth 900 million Yuan.

He revealed that his government would also assist the foreign affairs ministry to set up a Foreign Affairs Institute to train Ugandan diplomats.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda; Ministers Jessica Alupo, (education and sports), Irene Muloni (energy and minerals), Henry Okello Oryem (state minister for international affairs) and the state minister for regional cooperation, Asuman Kiyingi.
