THE newly elected Uganda Rugby Union (URU) chairman Andrew Owor has pledged to undertake major changes that will significantly improve the sport in the next couple of years.

The changes will include setting up leadership structures at club level, training coaches and referees in his two-year term of office.

Owor made his intentions clear soon after being ushered in as the new URU chairman unopposed after his opponent Gilbert Bayenda’s (Jinja RFC) nomination was annulled during the elective assembly that was held at Kyadondo Rugby Club on Sunday.

“We need proper leadership structures in all departments of rugby if we are to have effective implementation of all our development plans,” Owor stated.

The former Kyadondo chairman, who replaced William Blick —the current Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) President —further explained that his body will target increasing sponsorship partnerships and union income by creating revenue generating projects.

“URU has managed to reduce its debt from sh200m to sh80m and we hope we shall reduce this to sh50m or even clear it by the end of our term in office,” Owor added.

“My culture is simple, we don’t have money, we don’t do it (commit our selves),” he stressed before adding that he will also work to harmonise the relationship among clubs.

The 34 year-old former Buffaloes coach will run the body with Ian Walker (vice), Michael Wandera (secretary) and Alex Kalimugogo, who was elected treasurer unopposed.
