The traffic flow around Makerere University will this time not be interrupted as the institution holds its 65th graduation ceremony, Police has said.

The three-day ceremony will run from January 21st  (today) to 23rd on Friday at the university's freedom square, where over 13,000 students will be awarded degrees and diplomas in different disciplines.

Addressing journalists at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kamapala, the traffic operations commander, Norman Musinga said traffic officers have been deployed heavily to make sure that traffic is not disrupted on other roads.

"We want business to continue normally in and outside the university. Traffic officers will guide the traffic flow. We have no diversions this time. We only want motorists to follow the guidance of our officers," he noted.

Musinga said only three gates will be used by all guests to attend the ceremony.

According to guidelines, the main gate will be used by VIPs, University officials and members of academic procession, parents and graduands from Old Kampala and Law Development Centre.

The Eastern gate will be used by parents and graduands from Gayaza round about and Wandegeya junction, while the Western gate will be accessed by those from the Nothern route of Bwaise and Kasubi (Hoima road).

Musinga said traffic officers will guide the different groups where to park. "We have enough parking but motorists must follow traffic officers' directives. Those who park illegally in and out of the university will have their vehicles towed to Wandegeya police for further management," he added.

He said a standby emergency team has been set up at Makerere Police Station in case of any reported incident in and out of the university.

"I warn parents and graduands to avoid drunk driving because of excitement. They must follow traffic rules to avoid disrupting their happiness," Musinga added.

Musinga said they have issued special stickers for each category, for different days except the VIPs, to avoid any forgeries and masqueraders.

"Any one without the required sticker will not be allowed to access the university," he said.
