After winning her 8th career trophy at the 12th edition of the juniors’ mini golf tournament, Doreen Kirabo is looking forward to becoming a Ugandan champion.

The 15-year old S2 student at Kololo SS in Kampala, started the game at six years and is now one of the handicapped golfers who compete alongside senior lady golfers.

The handicap 32 golfer is one of those juniors who have come through the ULGU holiday training programme, now in its 12th year. The programme has produced several other youngsters who have gone on to excel at national level in various tournaments.

The kids start learning by putting on the practice green. They are then taken to the driving range as they grow up and eventually start playing on the course depending on age and ability.

Having won this year’s juniors’ tournament that climaxes the holiday programme Kirabo, whose parents don’t play the game, wants to become the first champion in her family.

“I want to continue playing and maybe one day become a champion like Flavia Namakula,” Kirabo, whose professional ambition is to become an accountant, said.

“I started learning the game with pro Sadi Atibu, then Deo Akope. Several other lady golfers and pros have been training us since,” Kirabo recalls.

ULGU president Esther Okullo is full of praises for the training camp.

“ Now we a have reached a point where most of our juniors are going on the course, some have handicaps; so what we are going to do next is get a few who are consistent and groom them into very serious golfers” Okullo stated.
