Kyambogo fraud: Accountant arrested

The Senior Accounts Assistant, Julius Tumushabe of Kyambogo University has been arrested in the sh35b tuition fees suspected fraud that has hit the institution.

Police allege that Tumushabe connived with some bank officials to channel fees deposited on to the university account to personal accounts.

Tumushabe is the second university official to be arrested in the ongoing probe. The assistant bursar Gonzaga Walubi was arrested last week.

Herbert Wanyoto, the police intelligence officer in charge of the investigations, said police needed explanations from Tumushabe in connection to the matter.

Tumushabe was arrested on Monday and held on alleged embezzlement charges at Jinja road Police station.  He was later released on a Police bond on Tuesday after he recorded statements with the police in connection to the matter.

Wanyoto added that, documents recovered in earlier investigations when the police conducted a search in the office of Walubi link Tumushabe to the alleged fraud.

The documents were recovered by Jinja road police detectives who conducted the search in Walubi’s University office and the institution stores where some documents were reportedly being kept. The exercise was conducted last week.

Last week the police also grilled the Kyambogo University chief internal auditor, Henry Duku, the University bursar Ham Mungyereza and the acting University Vice Chancellor, John Opuda-Asibo over the missing 55% of the tuition fees paid by students of University.

A whistle blower has petitioned the IGG that about sh20b could have been lost in different faculties in 2011/2012.
