Mulago National referral has received a set of equipment from PACE to help mothers in the labour ward.

The equipment includes delivery sets and Autoclave sterilizer machine.

Dr. Evelyn Nabunya, a consultant at obstetric and gynecology ward, said that the donation will go a long way in making sure that the delivery sets are sterilized in a timely manner, being able to cater for the big number of mothers.

"Our labour ward in New Mulago did not have an autoclave machine; we have been using the central sterilizing centre for sterilization. Having this machine we shall be able to prevent the problem of infections," Nabunya noted.

According to the recent statistics, infections contribute 22 percent to maternal morbidity and mortality in Uganda.

The executive director of PACE, Zacch Akinyemi said; "With the sterilizer, expectant mothers' lives will be saved as a result of having all midwifery equipment sterilized to reduce the chances of infection.

The hospital's executive director, Dr. Baterana Byarugaba said, the construct of women hospital will kick off in March this year.
