Two Ugandan truck drivers, Vincent Muwonge and Joseph Kakooza, are in critical condition at Juba Complex Hospital in South Sudan after being an attacked by unknown gunmen.

The two were attacked 40km away from the capital, Juba.

The assailants, who are still on the run, raided a convoy of cars driving to Uganda before shooting the two truck drivers in the legs and arms.

Deputy Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango yesterday said the injured victims were recovering in hospital.

He refuted media reports that assailants were only targeting Ugandan drivers.

Onyango said at the time of the attack, Kakooza was driving a cargo truck registration number CE 977F before he was shot in the left leg while Muwonge sustained injuries in his right arm. Muwonge was also driving a cargo truck.

The deputy commander for the integrated highway patrol, co-ordinating operations on the Kampala-Juba highway, Stephen Odongkara, said they were already working with their counterparts in South Sudan to combat the rampant robberies.

However, cargo transporters from Uganda to Juba have expressed dissatisfaction with the commitment of both the government of Uganda and that of South Sudan in combatting the rampant robberies and killings of innocent Ugandans in Juba.

Uganda National Transporters Alliance chairman William Busuulwa said several other cargo transporters to South Sudan have lost their lives while others have been seriously injured during several robbery attacks. They added that there are many other cases that are not usually reported
