The Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) has warned coaches of new rules that will see the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) do random tests for banned substances within the country.

Donald Rukare, the USF president revealed during a three day FINA Coaches certification clinic at the Hotel Africana that Dr Robert Zavuga who heads the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) medical commission will be designated to handle the doping tests for WADA.

Prior research has shown high marijuana use by Ugandan athletes, especially footballers. Under the new guidelines, all athletes that have qualified for international events will be subject to random tests.

He also urged the coaches against sexual harassment.

A scholarship of one Ugandan coach was recently cancelled for sexual harassment.

Jasper Aligawesa, the secretary general of the National Council of Sports (NCS) said the certification clinic was recognition of the accomplishments of Uganda’s swimming coaches.

US based senior consultant, Richard Powers said FINA came up with the course to ensure that coaches in developing countries keep up with those in developed countries like the US and Europe.

Powers is also running a Swim Camp from 12 - 21 January at Olympia Hostel in Makerere Kikoni.
