The Magamaga weigh bridge along Jinja-Bugiri highway has started operation. Cargo trucks are weighed for compliance to axel load limits.

This is intended keep the roads in good condition by preventing overloading which leads to quick wear and tear. The Magamaga weigh bridge is now the third on the northern route with others at Busitema and Busia.

Ponsiano Yanda, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) manager for this weigh bridge said they commenced operation in April and a total of 5,954 cargo trucks have been weighed.

“Close to 20% of the weighed trucks are overloaded but presently we just pardon them and advise them on better practices as we await communication from our headquarters in Kampala to start taking legal action against culprits,” said Yanda.

Dan Alinange, the UNRA spokesperson said the Government with the support from European Union is installing weighbridges along different routes on the national road network to protect roads from premature dilapidation.

Under the weigh bridge regulations 2010, the maximum allowable gross weight for any truck on the road is 56 tonnes and eight tonnes for each axle.
