Kampala A 67 Mukono 72

UCU Canons point guard Cyrus Kiviri turned on the style as Mukono overcame Kampala A 72-67 in a mouth-watering East and Central Inter-Cities Basketball Championship encounter that was decided in the last 40 seconds.

Kiviri who joined the side 2 months ago, was not among the starting five came on and took charge of the game against illustrious opponents in Norman Blick, Steven Omony and Ben Komaketch.

He made 18 points (4 three pointers), picked 8 rebounds and made three assists to guide his side past an experienced side that is arguably the best team in the tournament on paper.

Sudi Ulanga and Boniface Okello both reached double figures in the game with 14 and 12 respectively.

“This team has been together for a good time, they play good basketball and I am happy being a part of it. Kampala A had a good game but a few mistakes swung the game in our favour” stated Kiviri after a deserving win.

Mukono enjoyed fruitful 1st and 3rd quarters winning those 25-13 and 21-25 respectively but losing were outscored in the 2nd quarter 10-22 courtesy of a rampant Ben Komaketch who managed a game high 20 points.

Omony with 15points was the only other Kampala A player who managed a double figure score.

Kampala A got a chance to send the game into overtime with 40 seconds left on the clock when they were trailing by just two points.

Omony failed to put away a lay-up and they were caught on a break from which Blick fouled Jonathan Egau who managed to convert one out of the two free-throws to stretch the lead to three points with just 26 seconds left.

Kampala had possession but Ronnie Kasewu failed to put away a three point attempt and eventually conceded possession to Mukono.

Kiviri had acres of space to put the last nail in the coffin and did the basic; a simple lay-up to widen the margin to 5 points with 14 seconds.
