ENTEBBE - President Yoweri Museveni has sent out a Christmas message wishing all Ugandans a merry festive season, but cautioned against recklessness.

In the message released to the media from State House, Museveni seized the occasion to appeal against speeding during the festive season.

“Dear Ugandans, I greet you all. On December 31, I will deliver my New Year’s address with more details. I, however, wish you a merry Christmas. For those travelling upcountry, don’t speed.

“Personally, I never go beyond 100km per hour on a good tarmac road and I don’t go beyond 80km per hour on a murram road. Don’t risk your lives and the lives of your loved ones this festive season,” Museveni advised.

The President’s message comes at a time when the Police have intensified deployment of traffic personnel on roads and warning against drunk-driving and speeding.

Over 1,093 traffic officers and non-uniformed Police have been deployed at different black spots along highways and other roads in the country, to check on the increasing accidents as the festive season sets in.

The Police have also put in place a number of measures, including intensifying operations of the highway integrated traffic Police on major highways leading in and out of the city, stepping up drink-driving operations and clamping down on vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions, factors that fuel road carnage in the country during the festive season, leading to loss of lives and property.

This festive season, the Police working in partnership with Uganda Breweries Limited, have launched a safe driving campaign, which targets those who drink and drive.

According to the Police annual crime and traffic safety report, 2,937 people were killed in road accidents in 2013, compared to 3,124 in 2012, translating into a six percent decline.
