Jinja authorities have unveiled a plan that will see the town redesigned and re-awakened as the major tourist hub in the country.

The plan will see the town redesigned and re-awakened as the major tourist hub in the country, the Mayor of Jinja Municipal Council, Mohammed Baswale Kezaala.

He revealed that sh3.7bn has already been pooled from the various private firms in the area awaiting implementation of the programme.

“We want to redeem the town of Jinja and bring back its former glory because this in the long run will attract investment and take it to its original status of the biggest industrial towns in Uganda,” Kezaala said.

The campaign that kicks off next month will begin with painting of over 70 buildings along the Jinja main street and planting of trees and flowers in the road islands that have since lost the vegetation. A total of sh960m has been allocated for this particular exercise.

Kezaala said that they have secured the services of over 200 participants from the Common Wealth Local Governments Summit to take part in the painting exercise.

“We are involving school children, boda boda cyclists, taxi drivers and shop owners since they are the people on the ground and by owning them they can protect the developments.

The Town Clerk, David Kyasanku said by-laws will be put in place to maintain the new developments.

“We shall designate a place where advertisers can have their posters and streamline garbage collection,” Kyasanku said.
Kyasanku urged Jinja residents support the programme.
