Joseph Lubega gears up for title defence

WBC international light heavyweight champion Joseph ‘Joey Vega’ Lubega received a boost for his title defence with a donation of sh70m from Rwenzori Mineral Water on Monday.

The offer was unveiled by Rwenzori brand manager John Katete at Zion Hotel in Kampala.

The amount will help fight organizers Lash Media in conjunction with Uganda Professional Boxing Commission to hold a world-class show on June 1.

The show dubbed the Rwenzori Boxing Gala will involve a muaithai bout featuring Thailand-based Ugandan martial artist Umar Semata taking on Egyptian Rhys Karakyriacos.

Lubega who delivered a fourth round knockout against Kirt Sinnett of Trinidad and Tobago last September is lined up against Egyptian challenger Hany Atiyo Ramadhan.

The former Olympian who stretched his record to 21 fights 15 wins (6KOs) 5 losses and 1 draw promised his opponent another knockout.

“This is a very special moment. It is very important that I defend this belt at home. I feel I’m already fit enough. But all the same I’m going to do every other thing it takes to retain this belt,” vowed Lubega who appealed his fans to come and give him the support when the big occasion comes.
