While many professional golfers left Kihihi praising the challenging nature of the Garuga Golf Course, some left cursing after posting weird scores during the Paulo Ngorogoza memorial tournament in Kanungu.
Having played a blind course due to their late arrival and missing out on a practice round on Thursday – the eve of the tournament – majority of them returned scores that could easily pass as amateur scores.
Denis Anguyo, who recently won the Kakira open in Jinja and finished 6th overall, was heard complaining of too many hazards and OBs (out of bounds).
Meanwhile, Ian Odokonyero wished some of the fairways were a bit wider while Godfrey Mande praised the layout but after returning 88 in the first round, he could not complete the second due to “fatigue”.
"It is a good and challenging course; only the fairways need improvement. All the holes are on raised ground, so there is no easy hole," Fred Wanzala, who finished third, noted.
Others like Brian Mwesigwa, Ian Odokonyero and Grace Ocici will wish to quickly forget about the tournament after returning over 100 strokes over par over the 36 holes.
Entebbe-based Silver Opio consequently took the biggest share of the sh10m cash prize after posting the best gross score of 154 over 36 holes.
Work on the championship course is ongoing as it is due to host even bigger tournaments.
