The UAE, whose largest city is Dubai, is located in the Middle East, along the northern coast of the Arabian Gulf bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia.

It is a federation of seven states formed in 1971 by the then Trucial States after independence from Britain. Since then, it has become one of the Middle East’s most important economic centres.

Since the discovery of oil in the UAE more than 30 years ago, the country has undergone profound transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with a high standard of living.

The UAE’s per capita GDP is at par with those of leading West European nations.
