In a bid to reduce misuse of its vehicles, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has introduced a computerised system to monitor them.

Under the new fleet management policy, electronic devices are attached to vehicles to detect their movements.

“We installed devices with a monitor in every vehicle. It helps our officers to track the vehicles,” a source said.

Saturday Vision has learnt that the authority started implementing the policy this week. The source said all KCCA vehicles were registered last week in the new computerised system.

Drivers received instructions to park the vehicles at KCCA headquarters before 6:00pm.

“We are trying to cut expenditure. We discovered that some officials have been conniving with drivers to use KCCA vehicles for their personal business,” a senior KCCA official said.

In this arrangement, it is only the enforcement department that will use KCCA vehicles beyond the restricted time.

“Enforcement officers need vehicles during their operations to crack down on illegal activities, especially at night,” a source said.

Last year, KCCA procured 27 double-cabin pick-up trucks for nine directorates. In May, the authority is planning to procure nine more vehicles for its directors. A performance analysis report released after the first quarter showed that the authority managed to collect sh16b against a target of sh24b.
