A murram quarry in Soroti district, eastern Uganda, has caved-in burying two people.

A murram quarry in Soroti district, eastern Uganda, has caved-in burying two people.


The mid-morning disaster occurred at Amoru village in Asuret sub-county, about four kilometres from Soroti town, along Old Mbale Road.

The buried have been identified as Jacob Edrek and Walter Okello.

Area LC1 vice-chairperson, Joyce Adibo, said the deceased were underground excavating murram when the quarry-walls caved-in burying instant.

The mine has a huge deep and  despite the risk, locals defy directives from the authorities to stop mining.

The District Police Commander (DPC), Soroti, Joab Waburi said: “We have been able to retrieve the two bodies and have taken them to the mortuary.” 

The father to Okello 21, Richard Okello told the New Vision that his son was a student at Madera Technical School pursuing Motor Vehicle mechanics.
