A team of seven UPDF golfers has left for Bahrain for the ‘Friendship through Sport’ military games in Bahrain due November 13-21.

Lt. Gen. Ivan Koreta alongside Brigadier Phinehas Katirima lead the UPDF delegation to the 8th edition of the International Military Sports Council organised games. Uganda is competing at this level for the fourth time.

Capt. Bob Drani is captain of the team that is comprised of Uganda Ladies open champion Corporal Flavia Namakula, Captain Evelyn Asiimwe and Captain Aloysius Kimera.

The rest are Sergeant Yona Ntegyerize, Private Timothy Okwi and Private Geoffrey Orach.

The team flew out on Wednesday to compete alongside other military teams from Botswana, Canada, Germany, Thailand, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and the United States of America who will field golfers in both the men and women categories.

Latvia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Estonia, France and Spain will field only male golfers.

An interesting aspect of the World Military Golf Championship is the wide disparity in experience levels among the participants.  With consideration of this fact experienced players spend time at the practice area to assist less experienced players in improving their games.

CISM annually organises over twenty Military World Championships for different sports in which all member nations can take part. They also organize continental and regional competitions and every four years the Military World Games are held.
