Having two Muslim leaders in the country has slowed development and growth in the community, Sheikh Suleiman Ssozi, a visiting Sheikh at the Mukwano Mosque in Kampala, has said.

He made the remarks recently, while delivering a Khutubah (sermon) during Jumah prayers at the mosque.

Mufti Ramadhan Mubajje, the head of the Uganda Supreme Muslim Council is based at ) Old Kampala, while Supreme Mufti Zubair Kayongo is based at the Kibuli Mosque.

Ssozi said having two muftis was a recipe for disunity. “Are you not ashamed of identifying yourself as a Muslim belonging to a certain side? How long can we go on like this? If the prophet came back today, what would we tell him?” he asked.

Ssozi described the current state of affairs as uncalled before Allah. He added that upon the inception of Islam, Allah chose the Holy Prophet Muhammad to lead others.

After his death, caliphs (successors of Prophet Muhammad) such as Abubaker, Umar and Uthman led other believers; during their time of service, no other leader sprung up.

Ssozi appealed to the two Muslim leaders to reconcile, basing on teachings of the Holy Koran, to pave way for the development of the Muslim community in the country.

“The Koran stipulates guidelines for people who are in conflict and how such problems are handled. But our leaders instead keep their Korans at home and in the offices and drag each other to court. This is why they have gone astray,” he says.
