KAMPALA - Jinja SS beat surprise finalists Wanderers to lift their maiden national women Twenty20 cricket league title, outside the school competition.

The students chased the Wanderers’ target of 85 runs, winning it by two balls to spare in a pulsating game at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on Sunday.

The eastern-based school had the duo of Rachael Ntono (23) and Prico Nakitende (19) to thank, having managed to keep their wickets  and set  a good  run rate in their chasing after Wanderers’ Janet Mbabazi had claimed  the opening duo of  Damalie Busingye (05), who she trapped leg-before-wicket, and Ritah Musamali (07), who she had clean bowled.

The work of the partnership of Ntono (trapped LBW by Lydia Bakumpe) and Nakitende (caught and bowled by Naome Kayondo) put a comfortable ground on which the duo of Kevin Awino (04*) and Patricia Busingye (11*) managed to hold on until they won with three balls to go.

Wanderers’ Mbabazi had been outstanding  as an opener,  putting up 23 runs before she was  bowled by Stephan Nampiima,  with her opening partner  Naome Kayondo (23) also being bowled by Nakitende as they left other teammates struggling against an average bowling but tight fielding as they set 85.

Earlier in the day, Tornado endured five dropped catches and lack of concentration as the table leaders fell to Wanderers , who were fourth on the table in the regular season  by 12 runs  at Lugogo.

Meanwhile, Jinja SS silenced two-time defending champions Charity, a side they beat by five wickets in the game at Kyambogo.
