UPC's Otunnu given five days to apologise

KAMPALA - The Attorney General, Peter Nyombi, has summoned the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president Olara Otunu to apologise in five days’ time for false accusations he made last week in the media against President Yoweri Museveni.

The letter addressed to Otunnu was read on Thursday in a press conference at Uganda House.

It referred to an article in Daily Monitor page 5 of January 17, where he alluded to the “death” of Museveni’s allies since FRONASA (Front for the National salvation) struggles to-date.

The UPC leader wrote further that the death of former Butaleja MP Cerinah Nebanda should be “an eye opener to Ugandans”.

‘’We now speak of poisoning as if we are catching flu. The assassinations are intended for those who know how things were going which they were about to expose,’’ Otunnu said in the article.

In the same article, Otunnu cites alleged deaths in Ombaci College, Muslims in Ankole and the “burning of people at Mukura” in Teso and the war in the north as “some of the suspicious killings made by the Government”.

The AG said Otunnu’s article had maliciously brought hatred, contempt, ridicule and injury to the reputation of the President.

In his reaction to the letter, Otunnu refused to apologise, saying he was only addressing the masses.

He said that on the contrary, it is Museveni who owes Ugandans an explanation about the suspicious deaths.
