Singapore v Uganda

Singapore are often cited as evidence of how Uganda have wasted 52 years of independence. Uganda, the argument goes, was more developed than Singapore when the two countries got free from colonial rule in 1962 but as of 2014, Singapore is so far ahead comparisons are not even fair.

However, today, Uganda can prove that Singapore is not better at everything, certainly not at all-important indicator called cricket.

The two countries lock horns on Day Two of the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Malaysia, right in Singapore’s neighbourhood, which is the perfect setting for the Cricket Cranes to punish Singapore for always reminding us how we’ve blown it.

Both teams come into the match having won their opening assignments on Thursday but Frank Nsubuga’s Uganda could be the more confident given the dramatic calibre of their victory against top-seeded Nepal.

Having lost the toss and put in to bat, Uganda collapsed to 5-23 inside 14 overs, sending their net browsing fans back home into early-morning fits.

But in stepped Philemon Mukobe and Vice-captain Brian Masaba to the rescue. The two erected a sixth-wicket stand of 100 runs with Mukobe and Masaba reaching 84 and 51 respectively before being dismissed.

By then, though, the comeback was on and the confidence just carried through Uganda’s defence. Uganda’s final score of 203 was far from untouchable but Davis Karashani took 4/33, Roger Mukasa 3/28 and Jonathan Sebanja (who had earlier scored 20 runs) claimed 2/28 as Nepal were bowled out for 183 in 48.5 overs.
