Confusion reigned in the Geoffrey Kazinda bail application at the anti-corruption Court after he turned up on Tuesday morning and found neither his lawyer nor the Judge.

The embattled Principal Accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) at the heart of a corruption scandal involving an almost sh60bn fraud is on remand at Luzira prison. He was escorted to the court by Prisons Warders.

Justice David Wangutusi had warned when the court last sat over the case that he would be away for a Judge’s conference and adjourned the matter to January 29, 2013. However, according to this week’s cause list pinned on the Anti-Corruption Court notice board on Monday, Kazinda was scheduled to appear before Justice Wangutusi Tuesday.

But his lawyer, Isaac Walukagga who appeared after the registrar had adjourned the bail application to February 1, 2013, told journalists that he was not aware that the application had been fixed for yesterday. He also denied knowledge of who fixed it for hearing Tuesday. He said that also did not know that the judge would be a way at a conference.

Kazinda faces charges of abuse of office, forgery and uttering false documents. He allegedly made computer generated letter and cash withdrawal forms bearing a forged signature of the Permanent Secretary, Pius Bigirimana.
