Police confirms 13 Christmas Day deaths

Over 25 people are reported to have died from various causes in Uganda on Christmas Day, but Police has confirmed only 13 deaths.

Over 25 people died from various causes in Uganda as the world celebrated Christmas Day on Tuesday according to the New Vision survey. However, the Police confirmed 13 deaths.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Police deputy spokesperson Vincent Ssekatte said six of the victims succumbed to fatal road accidents, while the death of two others resulted from fire incidents at home.

Five people were murdered while two others are said to have committed suicide, according to Ssekatte.

Kampala

A 12-year-old girl, identified as Scola Nekesa, died from injuries sustained in a fire at her home in Nabweru, a Kampala suburb, on Christmas Day.

Both of her parents and three siblings were also burnt and are now admitted at Mulago Hospital. Ssekatte said unidentified people doused their house with petrol, before setting it ablaze.

In another incident, a man identified as Ben Nkunge, was knocked down by a speeding car at Kawuku trading centre on the Kampala-Entebbe highway on the same day.

Kibaale

The Police is hunting for a man identified as Juma for allegedly stabbing to death a 26-year-old man, a resident of Mpogo camp. The two reportedly picked a quarrel in video hall before the incident.

Sironko

David Wekona, a resident of Were village in Bukusu sub-county, was killed and his body dumped in a stream, following a misunderstanding with his brother-in-law identified as Robert Masaba. Masaba reportedly asked Wekona to convince his estranged wife to return home in exchange for sh20,000.

Masaka

A man identified as Julius Ssali was beaten to death by two unidentified men following a fight over a bar attendant identified as Betty Nakawala. The suspects are on the run.

Iganga

An unidentified man fell off the fence of Tembo Steel Rolling Mills on the night of Christmas and died instantly, after guards at the factory fired bullets in the air in an attempt to scare him off.

Kisoro

A 50-year-old man identified as James Bakesigaki died at a friend’s home on Christmas Day, where he joined four friends to drink alcohol at about 7:00am.

The deceased reportedly started feeling weak at 9:00am and started vomiting, before collapsing 30 minutes later. The Police are holding four suspects who were drinking from the same pot with the deceased.

Rukungiri

Three members of the same family in Nyakishenyi sub-county were lynched on Christmas Day by a mob which accused their mother of practising witchcraft. The three were indentified as Adson Mugumya, Gamanyire Twesigomwe and Muhumuza Nshaija. Their mother, Felisita Kyenderesire, was beaten into coma and is now admitted at Kisizi Hospital.

The officer in charge of investigations, Michael Ogwal, however, said preliminary investigations had linked the murder to land conflicts.

In a related incident, 57-year-old Livingstone Kasigaire, a resident of Kafunjo cell, Katwekamwe ward was killed on the same day. Three people, including his son and sister-in-law, were arrested in connection with the murder. Ogwal said the son of the deceased had been involved in a land wrangle with his father.

Wakiso

Brian Turinawe, a private security guard attached to Premier Security Company, reportedly shot himself. Turinawe reportedly left behind a suicide note for his father stating that he lacked money.

In a related incident, the Police Marine Unit is searching for the body of a woman who drowned in Lake Victoria at Anderita Beach in Entebbe, in a suspected suicide attempt.

Namutumba

Four people, including two bank managers, died in two separate accidents in Namutumba district over the Christmas holiday while several others sustained injuries.

Janat Watuwa, the manager of Orient Bank Mbale branch and Godfrey Bagonza, a manager of United Bank of Africa Mbale branch, together with Peter Mawanda, his workmate, perished in a road accident on the Iganga-Tirinyi-Mbale highway on December 24.

In another incident, a pupil of Victory Primary School identified as Wilson Muzaale, died in a road accident on Christmas Day. The incident occured at Bulange trading centre.

Kasese

A 30-year-old UPDF officer attached to Kyanzukyi army detachment shot himself dead on Christmas Day following a two-week quarrel with his wife.

The army’s 305 brigade spokesperson, Lt. Ninsiima Rwemijuma, confirmed that Private Uziah Bwambale, shot himself dead at about 6:30pm in his house on Christmas Day. Bwambale, 30, was born in Kitsutsu village, Munkunyu sub-county in Kasese district.

In another incident, a seven-year-old girl identified as Neema Biira from Nsenyi, Kisinga sub-county was burnt to death in her house. Her parents reportedly left her at home to attend a party.

In a separate incident, Rosette Musoki, 22, a resident of Kyasungwa village of Mubuku parish in Maliba sub-county, Kasese district, was on Christmas night found dead in a bush between Karungibati and Mubuku central forest reserve. Her body was found with multiple cuts.

Ntungamo

A 32-year-old man identified as Albert Mugume was knocked dead by a speeding car in Itojo parish on Christmas Day.

Mbarara

Five-year-old Grace Kemigisha was knocked by a speeding car.

Lira

George Opio was knocked dead in Lira district.

Two more unidentified people were killed in separate road accidents at Busega and Mukono municipality on Christmas Day, Ssekatte disclosed.
