Police Thursday afternoon released a Mulago Hospital Pathologist, Dr. Sylvester Onzivua after spending 48hours in custody at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka, a Kampala suburb.

Onzivua was arrested on Tuesday at Entebbe Airport while taking body samples of fallen Butaleja MP Cerinah Nebanda to South Africa for forensic investigations.

The Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba confirmed to New Vision his release from the police cells but added that they were still processing his bond papers and terms.

“It is mandatory for a suspect to be released on a police bond after 48 hours of being in custody as investigations are ongoing,” Nabakooba said.

Police on Wednesday was contemplating to arraign the pathologist before court and plead to abuse of office charges.

Several Members of Parliament (MP) protested at the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka where Onzivua is still held.

The MPs led by Abdu Katuntu vowed amidst heavy anti-riot Police not to vacate the SIU premises until Dr. Onzivua is set free. Police had sealed off the entrance to the SIU premises.

“We shall not leave SIU until the pathologist is freed,” Katuntu said.

Katuntu was accompanied by the parliamentary commissioner Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Hassan Kaps Fungaroo (Obongi constituency), Sam Lwamoki (workers MP), and Casiano Wadri (Terego MP).

Meanwhile the minister of Health, Presidency, Internal affairs and CIID boss are set to address a news conference at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala later in the afternoon on various developments related to Nebanda's death.
