It is an open secret that Ugandans love to party. A combination of good food, alluring music and enabling ambience is all we need to get it on.

What better reason to go to town than this festive season when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the end of year?

But as every woman knows, the dilemma lies in knowing what to wear to what event. Dress codes and themes are as varied as the parties themselves. Whether it is a small soiree, a house party or a huge end-of-year celebration, what you wear is important.

As always, the venue and invite are good indicators of how far to go in prepping for the party. Expensive invitation cards and posh venues mean you have to go the extra mile in the glam stakes. But in any case wherever the party is, elegance and poise are always called for.

There are four major events you may be invited to and here is how not to get it wrong.

The office party

Go for understated glamour in a simple cocktail dress, trouser suit or structured evening gown. Avoid plunging necklines and overly sexy attire. Remember that you are still within the work environment even if the party is away from office.

You don’t want to be misunderstood by your colleagues and bosses. And please, those dance strokes of gyrating hips and thrusting movements can easily tarnish your image.

Black tie event

This is a formal event that calls for a ball gown, evening dress or a cocktail dress. You really have to go the extra mile here.

Cocktail

Great for networking, a cocktail can be formal, semi-formal or casual. You can add a twist to your attire by going Afro-Western in a mix and match outfit of say satin or linen and ethnic print. Remember to wear sensible shoes as you will be on your feet throughout the ceremony.

Dance

Go all the way out in sequins and metallic colours. As the lights are reflected in your dress, you will easily be the belle of the dance.

Merry Christmas!
