MAKINDYE mayor Dr. Ian Clarke has tipped companies on having good medical benefits for their various employees which he said creates a good work force among them.

Clarke also said the cheapest way to meet health expenses is through medical insurance.

“One person under medical insurance will spend between Sh300, 000 and Sh550,000 annually for health expenses as compared to one who is not insured and is likely to pay the above amount at every visit to the doctor,” Said Clarke.

He was addressing a number of human resource managers and decision makers from different companies at a breakfast meeting held at Golf Course Hotel on Thursday. The meeting was organized by the IAA Healthcare, one of the oldest health insurance providers in Uganda.

Dr. Clarke noted that the perception that medical insurance is for the rich is totally wrong and that this mind set is a key constraint on medical growth in Uganda.

“People have not understood insurance and yet one cannot rule out sickness in their lives,” he said, urging people to plan for insurance like they plan for school fees.

The human resource managers had gathered to share the benefits of a good medical scheme. In attendance was Vision Group’s Beatrice Kentaro and Irene Bukirwa both working in the company’s HR department.

“A good medical scheme plays a big part in improving the welfare of employees and gives them reason to be associated with the company,” Clarke added. He is one of the proprietors of the International Medical Group.

Hebert Mukoza, the IAA Health care head of sales and marketing said IAA had partnered with Resolution Kenya, a specialist in medical coverage to enable its clients access medical coverage throughout the East African region at over 750 hospitals and clinics.

“We realized that most companies that are covered under us have their employees working within the East African region which is why we had to enter this partnership to plan better for them,” Mukoza said.
