The Wakiso district council is seeking sh480m for the completion of the council chambers whose progress had stalled for five years due to financial constraints.

Now the district hopes to have the works done by December this year. But first, of course, the much-needed money will have to be found.

According to the district LCV chairman Matia Lwanga Bwanika the money will be used to complete financing of civil and electrical works of the structure.

He said this while addressing the councilors on the progress of the construction of the building at the district headquarters on Tuesday.

The meeting was held under a tent in the compound of the district headquarters and moments later the group inspected the ongoing works at the building about 15 meters away.

He told the councilors that the implementation challenges have hinged on the inability to raise the hefty funds required for the project.

Initially, the works had been projected to cost sh1.3bn but the district fell short of that ambition.

“The project was planned for over one billion shillings [sh1bn] but the district has been able finance it only up to nine hundred million shillings.  To complete the remaining works we need over four hundred million shillings [sh400m].”

The district Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) David Kigenyi Naluwayiro said the council has not had any ideal premise for conducting their meetings since the creation of the district in 2000.

“The council has in an effort to have one planned and budgeted for the council chambers, a process that has delayed for so long,” he noted.

Once completed, the chambers will save the district a lot of money spent in renting places to hold the council meetings.
