NAIROBI - Uganda's girls won the inaugural U-19 tournament after a 14-0 whipping of Kenyan side Comras in a final played at Safaricom Stadium Kasarani on Friday.

Rita Najuma scored a try while Juliet Nandawula added a try and two conversions to win the tournament unbeaten.

“I’am very excited today that we have won this trophy. We came determined to win and am very grateful to the girls,” Afusa Munaba, the team captain, said after their triumph.

The young female ruggers had only three days of preparations and the team traveled without their coach who didn’t travel due to other commitments.

“This is a great performance for us and we are just to focus on these results to continue strengthening our team and I thank all that supported us,” said coach Brenda Kayiyi.

The Ugandan players started their battle at the East African Rugby Grounds where they finished unbeaten as they clinched the final.

The team was sponsored by Gulu Rugby Club with a sh2m contribution, well-wishers (sh1.5m) and Uganda Rugby Union (sh4m).
