FACE Technologies, the company contracted to print and issue computerised driving permits, has been given only two year to recover their investment and handover the project to the Government.

The firm has been printing and issuing computerised driving permits since 2003.

The work was in the past done by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), which is still the custodian of driving permit records.

The transport ministry recently revised fees payable to Face Technologies for driving permits effective Monday.

Nathan Tumushabe, the coordinator of the project, said driving permit fees payable to Face Technologies have been increased from sh20,000 to sh60,000 for new driving permits, renewals and for those that are being exchanged.

Fees for learners’ permits (provisional permits) have been increased from sh4,000 to Sh30,000, including all duplicate documents.

Tumushabe said fees for driving permits payable to URA were increased but those payable to Face Technologies have been static.

This means driving permits for one year cost sh120,000, including fees payable to Face Technologies and URA, but excluding fees for provisional driving permits and test fees payable to URA.

Tumushabe, however, added that driving permits fees are likely to go down when the Government takes over the project.
